Jon Rahm came within an inch of the 195-yard putt on the most challenging hole at Congaree,

one of many highs Friday with a 9-under 62 that gave him after winning the Spanish Open two weeks ago, Rahm did not look like a player taking it easy as the year ends.

He made four straight birdies on the front nine, all within 10 feet. He holed a 60-foot bunker shot on the par-four eighth,

holed a 35-footer on the par-three 10th, then capped off three straight birdies with a shot on the 17th that brushed the rim of the cup.

Needing one final birdie for his career-low round, Rahm's wedge at the 18th rolled down a steep slope and rested on the rake in the bunker.

His pitch was strong, rolling 30 feet around and he made his lone bogey. Kitayama, a 29-year-old Californian who has spent his first six years.

holed a tough shot from the bunker for eagle on the par-5 12-over 65 to join Rahm at 11-under 131.

Aaron Wise spent time on the putting drill after the opening round, which paid off with his round of 66. He was two back along with Cam Davis.
