McIlroy is the only PGA Tour winner from last season to decline an invitation to compete in Hawaii, while LIV Golf receives another huge blow

Rory McIlroy is the only PGA Tour winner from last season to decline an invitation to play in this week's Tournament of Champions at famed Kapalua, Hawaii.

McIlroy, who starts 2023 as world No. 1, last played the tournament on the Plantation Course in 2019.

McIlroy also won at the start of the 2022-23 season on the PGA Tour when he successfully defended the CJ Cup in October.

The tournament, as its name suggests, is an invitation-only tournament for last season's PGA Tour winners.

McIlroy did not play his first tournament of 2022 until the Genesis Invitational in mid-February. While McIlroy's PGA Tour schedule still remains unclear,

Despite McIlroy not playing in Hawaii this week, the field is loaded with star quality with the likes of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay,

With McIlroy on the couch, it means Scheffler can return to world number one with a big performance right out of the gate.
